Schedule meetings with your members of Congress during April recess

The April congressional recess is approaching and one of the most effective things your chapter can do is to take action on legislative priorities and meet with your Members of Congress or their staff when they are home in the district.

Federal employees, our agencies and our union are under attack.  Now more than ever, we all need to step up and do everything we can to ensure that the voices of federal employee constituents are heard and that our elected leaders understand the consequences of these attacks.

Set up a meeting now!  Remind your members of Congress of the importance of the services that you provide to the American people and ask that they protect their federal employee constituents. Make sure they understand that these actions against our government and its workforce will hurt their constituents, communities and the economy in every state and district across the country.

Steps for setting up in-district congressional meetings

1.     Contact District Director, Scheduler or District office near you – Click here to find contact information, visit the Election Center, type in your address/zip code, then view officials. If you have trouble, please contact stacy.casimiro@nteu.org for Congressional staff contact information.

2.     Use the Activism Toolkit to help you draft your simple meeting request. Access Meeting Request Template and email your request. Hint: Follow up with a phone call to ensure your email request was received.

3.     Make a Plan: Decide who is attending the meeting, have talking points prepared click here for some suggested talking points, remember to personalize your story and have a final ask!

4.     Tell us how the meeting went, please fill out your Congressional Contact form.

5.     Share photos here

Reminder: If you are unable to secure a meeting with your Member of Congress, ask for a meeting with the District Director or other staff. As you know, district meetings are highly effective, and it is the staffs’ job to ensure that your message gets delivered to your legislators.
